This past week, our Defensive Coordinator Coach Davis father had past away to the battle of cancer. Our team held him up in prayer through out the week during practice. On Friday, I received a call from Coach Davis. He had asked me if I was going to be busy on Saturday, and of course I was not going to be busy with things that needed my attention. He had asked me if I would read a scripture at his fathers funeral. What an honor! I had been looking forward to that Saturday morning football practice, but now there lie an opportunity to bring love and comfort through the word of God to a group of people who needed it. I mean it was not speaking to the president's cabinet or anything like that, but it was actually speaking to broken hearts, even though it was a scripture reading and a prayer, it was God's holy word that was spoken.
When I arrived there, I met up with Coach Davis, and he introduced me to his friend Brian that would be bringing the message. Then Coach Davis asked me if I had a scripture that I wanted to read. I looked at him, and said, "no, I thought you had it." He in returned looked at his friend Brian, and Brian had said that he could pick one out real quick, then they both looked at me, and said, "do you want to pick one out?" I said in return that I could if they wanted me to. This went around for a few more seconds then I said that I will pick one out. Then I had forgotten my bible in my car, and I had to go and retrieve it. Here I am asked to read a scripture and I forget my bible in my car. I really felt like all three of us had a 3 Stooges moment there.
As I went out to my car I had prayed that God would give me the very word He wanted me to read. When I got my bible John 14:1-3 quickly came to mind. I looked it up real quick when I got back inside the funeral home I sat across from Brian and told him what I was going to read and a few minutes later he pulled out his notes that he was going to go by, and on his notes was a scripture that he had wrote down, but then decided not to read it. That scripture happened to be John 14:1-3. As I look back on it I can see how God had orchestrated this whole ceremony. He had answered my prayer to speak before people by giving me a scripture to bring healing to a hurting family, and how He laid on Brian's heart the very message that he wanted him to bring.
This reminds me of how great and faithful God is. If God can bring two strangers together for one purpose, to speak healing and comfort to a grieving family and friends, then He can bring a group of total strangers together to minister to orphans half way across the world in Africa.
